[Zan'nen sucks gently on his fork. She was right. He had been very eager to help her, when really he felt it would've been more like him to send her away, or make a few jerk comments first. Maybe he'd just been lonely, or maybe he just couldn't damn well take it when girls cried. Either way, he didn't feel like it was anything he deserved any thanks for.]

Well, that's what- [What? Was he going to say that's what friends are for? That's what he was here for? How cheesy. That didn't feel right, coming from his mouth.

Mmrgh. He didn't know what he wanted to say. He placed his free hand on the crest of her head again, and lightly ruffled her hair.]

... I'm glad, too. [The way that he responded had been so awkward and shy that she's almost tempted to tease him, but not was not the time, and... Well, he didn't seem like the type who would take to that very well, if memory served correctly. Odd that they could seem so close when in reality they barely knew anything about each other at all, experiments aside.

[Judging by the way Zan'nen just inhaled milk into his lungs... No, no he did not. He'd just barely learned Frey even had a sister.]

[... Oops. Are you going to be okay Zan'nen? Because now she is worried about you potentially choking to death because she said something wrong. Just forgetting the other sister for the moment.]

I'm fine. [He takes a long sip of milk to clear his throat. Stupid. He was sure he'd heard of her before, he shouldn't of been so surprised. Damn Malnosso bastards...]

Mmm... [She'll just have to take his word for it, and hope that it was only a passing spell while she tries to think of the correct way to explain to him the circumstances of Lymsleia being here.]

It's been... at least a week now? I don't know for sure. But she's living with everyone else since and... Freyjadour's just been busy with her, I guess.

Huh? [Y'know, this scenario felt familiar.]

Hasn't he been paying enough attention to you? [It was true Frey seemed like the type to throw himself into things, but... Well, he wasn't heartless enough to start ignoring others out of the blue. Did they have a fight?]

He's busy, and she's his real sister. She's always going to matter more than I can ever be stupid enough to hope to. [If she could have, she would have left the house already so that they could simply enjoy each other's company without the non-Human between them. It's why she's been staying outside in the cold rather than sticking around inside the house and having to face all that truth in silence.

And it definitely hurt to have to acknowledge all that, despite the casual air her voice took on when she spoke. It was best to pretend that it didn't really matter, that she didn't really care. But that mask was always so transparent it was laughable.]

[Woah Kaori. That was a pretty heavy assumption. And despite the calm way she said it, he didn't believe she was calm at all. The sudden appearance of this other girl was ripping her apart.

But there was one subject that seemed to ruffle his feathers.]

Blood doesn't have to mean anything when it comes to family. [You could ask him all about that Kaori, but he felt like there was something more than that bothering her.]

From what I've observed, it usually does. [He was right about there being more bothering her than the fact that Lymsleia was here, though to be honest that issue could branch off into a whole new storm of thoughts and emotions she didn't know how to deal with.

It was an assumption, though not one without reason in her mind.]

I have stories that will tell you the exact opposite, but if that's what you believe, I guess it's not my place to argue. [Zan'nen pushes the food around on his plate for a moment, contemplating where to take this.]

From what you've observed with Frey, does that match up with him? ["You think you were a replacement?" was thankfully snipped out of his inquiry. With all of Frey's busybody heroic tendencies, he found it hard to believe that he would just ditch her when the real thing shows up, but it wasn't impossible, despite the faith he had in him. Humans were capable of very thoughtless things, himself included.] Has he done or said anything that would tell you that? Because I swear I can go punch him in the face if he has.

[He's not discounting your feelings Kaori, the exact opposite. What the truth was didn't matter in the least. What she was feeling was her reality, no matter what the actual situation was. He just was trying to get a feel for what she was experiencing.]

... We've barely spoken since she came, or... since the new year, actually. [It wasn't the first time she had noticed this, but the overwhelming sadness she felt was not dulled in the slightest when she remembered. December overall had been uncomfortable, but it paled in comparison to the month afterward. And a part of her, a small one that refused to go away no matter what she told herself, still believed that someday he would do the same.]

Please don't hurt him, he... he just has more important things to take care of. [What those things were she couldn't say exactly, but she knows they're more important. So why did she want to cry, her voice begin to crack after she paused? It made no sense.]

Kaori. Listen to me. You are important. I know you think you'd be getting in between the two of them, but that's just--[Nope. Not going to criticize, no point in making her feel worse about this than she does already.]

There is room for both of you.

[A part of her just wants to say that he's being naively stupid, given that as far as she knew Lymsleia was Freyjadour's queen and he was her sworn protector. How in the world would an anomaly such as herself stack against the pure girl that was needed by a country and would always be beloved by them, for whom he fought a war?

It just didn't happen. 'Important' was a word that rarely applied beyond being a rarity which needed to be watched closely, lest she tear apart everything around her. But is it still wrong for there to be a part of her that wants to believe him, or rather, does?]

... but how does that work? [Why was she important?]

I don't understand how there can be room for both. [Though that was far from the only thing she was questioning, especially given her upbringing. Everything was a hierarchy that was strictly followed, and no one questioned it. She never really did, at least regarding the hierarchy among her own kind.

Though that hair ruffle does calm her down, just a little. It was such a casual and comforting gesture, without being overly so, that it was able to have that effect. Not to mention that there was something undeniably nostalgic about it.]
